Episode 007 – The Three Against the Dark Novel Marketing Experiment

Watch Our Experiment Unfold

Over the coming months, Book Chats is going to conduct a novel marketing experiment using Three Against the Dark, a middle grade adventure/fantasy written by MK Christiansen, my wife. Three Against the Dark has suffered the fate of many of the well-written self-published books that I have loved over the years. It has sunk under the oblivion of the mass of books available on Amazon, because no one can buy a book they have never heard of or seen. It hasn’t sold a copy in over 5 years.

We will be covering this experiment is a series of “monologues” on the Book Chats Podcast, so that our listeners can see first hand how we put the lessons learned into real life use. Be sure to subscribe to the podcast to follow along. Our goal is to launch the book in March/April 2020.

At each stage of the marketing plan, I am going to bring the listeners of Book Chats along on the process.

The cover of Three Against the Dark is used in the Novel Marketing Experiment.

We are currently looking for a designer to redo the covers and a bookmark. This may take awhile so we have begun. The old cover add major issues such as unreadable text and the tell-tale homemade cover “by.” Just look at it.

We are also looking for a producer for the audiobook. We are using the ACX site which is operated by Audible. It is the equivalent of Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) for audiobooks. When the audiobook is finished it will be released on Amazon, Audible, and iTunes.

We will also be doing a real author page on Amazon and website, mkchristiansen.com, for Mary Kathryn. We will be doing the full author page thing with an email list and freebies. She also now owns ThreeAgainstTheDark.com which will point to a book page on her website so you can purchase the book there.

The Marketing Plan

Once all the basics of the book are in place, we will relaunch the book. Here’s what we are going to do.

  • We are going to target Top Amazon Reviewers for reviews of Three Against the Dark.
  • After we have 30-50 reviews, we will start “free pulsing” Three Against the Dark” using Robin Reads and similar email marketing. We will track the results to see which works best for us.
  • Then we will jump into the Amazon ad marketplace. We are already working on our Keyword list.
  • When we hit our goals we will have a party.

All of this is going to go into a spreadsheet to show the results, so stick around for the Three Against the Dark (TAD) Novel Marketing Experiment.
